How the mug is printed decides how you wash it

Verdict: for a mug someone will use every morning, choose sublimation. It is the only one of the three you can put in the dishwasher without thinking about it.
How to tell how a mug was made
- Run a fingernail over the design. A sublimated print is perfectly smooth, part of the surface. A decal has an edge you can feel.
- Read the listing. Sublimation listings say "dishwasher and microwave safe". Decal listings usually say "hand wash only" or "top rack".
- Look at the price and the photo. A full-colour photo or painted-style portrait that wraps the mug is almost always sublimation; a single-colour silhouette or lettering is often vinyl.

Questions
Will the dishwasher fade a sublimation pet mug?
Very slowly. Sublimation ink sits inside the coating, so it does not peel or scratch, but hundreds of hot, strong-detergent cycles can soften the colours a little over the years. A normal or eco cycle, rather than the hottest pots-and-pans setting, keeps it bright longest.
Can I microwave a custom pet mug?
Yes, if it is a sublimation mug with no metallic trim. Ours have no metal rim or gold accents, so they are microwave safe. Never microwave a mug with metallic paint or a metallic decal.
Is the print on the inside or the outside?
On the outside only. The inside of our mugs is plain white glossy ceramic, so your drink never touches the ink.
Are pet mugs lead-free?
Ours are: the ceramic and coating are lead- and BPA-free. For a mug from anywhere else, look for "lead-free" in the listing, especially for imported or vintage-style glazes.
What if the print arrives faded, smudged or wrong?

Is a 15 oz mug harder to wash than an 11 oz?
No. Both are the same shape and both fit a standard dishwasher rack. The 15 oz is taller, with a bigger print area.
